So, you have heard the name NMN or possibly also NAD+. Want to know how these compounds could slow down aging? Let’s start by understanding aging.
One of the ultimate causes of aging is the erosion of your DNA. Yes, the same DNA that is the essence of what we are, is slowly being worn out. It may sound scary but our cells do have a program to repair it. An enzyme named PARP (Poly ADP-ribose polymerase) can repair nicked DNA. Naturally we would want this enzyme to function properly, and NAD+ is the one ingredient that is essential to synthesize this enzyme. With sufficient amount of NAD+, we can produce enough PARP to perform its job efficiently.
One symptom of aging is the lack of energy. Cellular energy is produced by the organelle mitochondria. To produce energy that is called ATP, mitochondria perform a lengthy chemical reaction named respiration. NAD+ is one important link in the process of respiration. So with sufficient NAD+, mitochondria can perform respiration efficiently. And with more energy for the cell, the better it is at performing its various functions.

Another symptom of aging is the decline of cognitive capability, some people even develop mood disorder like depression or worse. Many mind-related problems are caused by the dysfunction of neurotransmitters. There are these enzymes named CD38 found on the surface of many cells that can interact with NAD+. CD38 can regulate the release of neurotransmitters. Furthermore, NAD+ and CD38 can subsequently produce ADP ribose. ADP ribose is known to activate the TRPM2 channel in the brain. All in all, NAD+ is essential for the proper function of our mind.
So we have been talking about NAD+ the whole time. You may wonder, why don’t we just take NAD+? Unfortunately, ingestion of NAD+ does not mean absorption. Much of the NAD+ never make it pass the stomach. Test subjects feed NAD+ did not show significant improvement. And this is where NMN come into play. Our body use NMN as raw material to make NAD+. Unlike NAD+, NMN can be absorbed very well, and once it has been absorbed, it can be turned into NAD+. It has been shown that after test subjects are fed NMN, they show great improvement in various metrics. Young subjects shown a delay in aging process; aged subjects even show a reversal in vitality. NMN is truly the fountain of youth.
